SUMMARY:Why ADHD Treatment Breaks Down: Keeping Clients Engaged\, Managing Rejection Sensitivity and What Works in Practice
DESCRIPTION:Dr. William (Bill) Dodson\, M.D.\, F-APA\nLive Webinar\nDelivered online via Zoom \n\n\nDate: Thursday 29 October 2026\nTime: 9:00 am – 12:30 pm AEDT\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nAccess: Live via Zoom\, with recording access available for 30 days \n\nWhy do people with ADHD not stick with treatment?\nIt is an open secret that the retention rate of people with ADHD is the worst in all of medicine. More than 150 studies have shown that 80-90% of people who have gone through a long and expensive assessment and tried at least one medication are no longer involved in any course of treatment at the end of one year. \nAnd yet\, some practitioners have a greater than 90% retention success rate. What do they know that could be used in clinical practice immediately and easily? \nThis presentation explains the powerful but unacknowledged forces doom most therapies before they begin. Rather than ignore this attrition rate\, successful clinicians start to address patient dropout from the very start in the first session by doing an Empathic Interview that is designed to bring a person who has been brought in to becoming a patient who has bought in. The actions and techniques that follow Once the person becomes an invested “patient”\,  the techniques and attitudes that help people stick to treatment are common sense and require no special skills to add them to your practice tomorrow. \n                                                                                                                                                       \nThis Update on Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is presented by the guy who first identified RSD and discovered two medication-based treatments\, Dr. Bill Dodson. \nAlthough RSD is not an official feature of ADHD and the research community in the United States loathes the entire concept\, rejection sensitive dysphoria is now widely accepted internationally by the people with ADHD who have the lived experience that tells them that this is an important new concept with direct importance to their lives.. \nGreat effort will be placed into making the distinction between Emotional dysregulation vs. sensitivity to rejection (which is a form of complex PTSD) vs. very specific syndrome we now call RSD. These distinctions must be clearly made because each condition has a different cause and different treatment. \nThe profound effects that RSD has on the development of personality will be discussed and the importance of early identification and treatment to prevent the development of ineffective coping strategies and negative self-talk that can quickly become the person’s internal “worst enemy”. \nFinally\, there will be a brief discussion about the necessity of combined medication and cognitive treatment for ED/RSD. \n  \nWhat this webinar will cover \n\nThe unacknowledged forces that doom ADHD treatment before it begins\nThe Empathic Interview: turning a “brought in” client into a “bought in” patient\nPractical\, common-sense retention techniques clinicians can use immediately\nThe distinction between emotional dysregulation\, rejection sensitivity (complex PTSD)\, and RSD\nThe developmental impact of untreated RSD on personality and coping style\nThe case for combined medication and cognitive treatment in RSD\n\nIn this webinar\, you will learn how to: \n\nAddress the core drivers of ADHD treatment attrition from the first session\nApply the Empathic Interview to convert a brought-in client into a bought-in patient\nUse common-sense retention techniques that require no specialist training\nDistinguish RSD from emotional dysregulation and complex-PTSD-based rejection sensitivity\nRecognise the developmental impact of untreated RSD on personality and coping style\nIntegrate medication and cognitive treatment for combined ED/RSD presentations\n\n  \nAbout the presenter\nDr. Bill Dodson is a Board-Certified adult psychiatrist who was one of the first clinicians who specialized in adults with ADHD 30 years ago.  He was named a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in recognition of his clinical contributions to the field of ADHD (2012).   He was recipient of the national Maxwell Schleifer Award for Distinguished Service to Persons with Disabilities (2006). \nHe has written more than 127 articles\, 17 webinars\, 6 research articles in peer-reviewed journals\, and 5 book chapters designed to help a lay audience better understand ADHD and its treatment. His article on the new definition of ADHD was selected by the editors of ADDitude magazine as the most influential article of the last 25 years He was inducted into the ChADD Hall of Fame and delivered the Keynote address at the International ADHD Conference in 2025. \nHis contributions to the field of ADHD include: \n\nThe identification and early advocate for the condition of Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD). First to recognize the two classes of medication that greatly lessen the impairments from RSD.\nThe new way of understanding of ADHD as not being a traditional disorder but rather a second type of nervous system that works perfectly well (ex-such as when in a hyperfocus state) but by its own rules that are completely different from what motivates and organizes neurotypical people.\nThe only published methodology for picking the appropriate ADHD medication and then fine tuning it to optimal performance and virtually no side effects.\nCreated the awareness of the huge problem of 80% of people with ADHD dropping out of treatment within the first year and how clinicians can reduce that attrition rate to just 10%.\nHas in the process of publication the first manual on the optimal multidisciplinary treatment of ADHD.\n\nHe currently divides his time between finishing a book on the optimal treatment of ADHD that is scheduled to come out in early 2027 and doing remote consultations with people from around the world who have not yet gotten the type of life-changing benefits that we know are possible for 96% of people with ADHD. \nCost: $150 per person\, including GST \nRegister & Pay
